Juhana Toivanen has arrived in Gothenburg.

Juhana Toivanen, who took up his position as postdoctoral research fellow and member of Representation and Reality March 1 will be working on medieval Latin theories of the internal senses. The main idea is to look at the psychological functions of these powers from the point of view of their joint activity. These powers are often analysed separately (medieval authors do so as well), but there are reasons to think that they form a dynamic whole, in which all the powers contribute to the unified perceptual experience that the subject has.
– My plan is to write a monograph that focuses on philosophically interesting aspects of medieval discussions. The book will cover roughly the period between 1200 and 1350, says Toivanen.

Toivanen studied philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), and defended his PhD dissertation on Peter Olivi’s philosophical psychology in 2009. Since then, he has been a visiting fellow in Paris (EHESS), Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, and the University of Cambridge. He finished his Academy of Finland postdoctoral research project Human Sociability in Medieval Philosophy last year, and has also worked as a lecturer in philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä. A unifying theme in his research activities is an interest in animals. What are the differences between humans and other animals, and how they were understood in the Middle Ages?

How do you feel about working in Gothenburg and the R&R looking forward?
– I feel excited about the new possibilities that becoming a member of R&R gives to me. I am looking forward to collaborating with the team, as the overall project is very interesting. After my excursion to political philosophy, it feels good to come back to a topic that is closer to my earlier research. Gothenburg seems to be a lively city, and I expect that working and living there will turn out to be rewarding in many ways, says Toivanen.

More information about Juhana Toivanen can soon be found at his personal presentation page.
